Breast Removal Techniques: Breast Reduction at Its Best

For people with over sized breasts, breast reduction is the only way to go. Not only does it eliminate all problems associated with over sized breasts, such as bad posture, skin rashes, skeletal deformities, as well as emotional and psychological problems, it also lets the person live a normal life, free from the burdens of a heavy chest.

There are some cases though, that breast removal is not applicable. For cancer patients, or people who want to avoid the risk of getting cancer, the best way to go is to have their breasts completely removed. This process is called mastectomy, or breast removal.

Radical or total mastectomy, which is done to do a complete removal of the breasts, has been performed for eliminating breast cancer. It has been around for about a century now, and has saved countless lives. There is a slight difference between radical mastectomy and total mastectomy. Radical mastectomy, as the name suggests, involves the removal of all of the breast and its parts. This means that all the underlying muscles and lymph nodes are also removed. Total mastectomy, on the other hand, is a procedure that may or may not include removing the lymph nodes.

Other types of breast removal procedures are quadrantectomy and lumpectomy. In quadrantectomy, only a quarter of the breast is removed, preserving the area that has not been infected. This can be done by with or without removing some of the axillary lymph nodes. Lumpectomy, on the other hand, removes only the tumor and the small area of normal tissue surrounding it.

Before undergoing any of these breast removal procedures, the patient should be clearly informed of all the risks and benefits of the procedure. This way, the results are guaranteed satisfactory, and the patient will not feel as if she (or he) has lost anything.
