Breast Reduction Recovery: Healing Every Stitch and Incision

To reduce the size of the breast, one procedure that candidates opt for is breast reduction surgery, which is performed by plastic or cosmetic surgeons. This procedure reduces the size of the breast by liposuction and reshaping of the breasts. Although the procedure is highly effective, not everyone who needs breast reduction choose to have it done due to its several disadvantages. Aside from being a very expensive operation, the procedure is also painful and takes quite a while to heal.

During the recovery period, the patient can experience a lot of discomfort. Ugly scars, infections and bleeding might also develop after the procedure. Although the results are excellent, with the breasts becoming perkier right away, many people are turned off by its disadvantages.

Breast reduction surgery is a safe procedure performed with the patient under general anesthesia. It is usually an outpatient treatment, although the patients may be required to stay in the hospital for a few days for recovery. After the surgery, female patients are required to have the breast area wrapped with gauze. They will also be asked to wear a supportive bra for more support. A few days after the surgery, the gauze bandage can be removed. The supportive bra, on the other hand, is required to be worn for up to several weeks until the breasts are healed from the swelling and bruising.

For male patients, a compression garment or a gauze bandage is required to be worn after the surgery. This is to support the breast area while the surgery wounds heal. The recovery process takes a long time, and can cause a lot of discomfort for most patients.

Patients can return to their normal activities usually between three to six weeks, although it is advised that they refrain from more strenuous activities. After the initial recovery period, patients can gradually ease back into their everyday routine. It could take as long as a few months before actual recovery from the surgery is achieved.
